ORGANIZATION BACKGROUND
Founded in 1908, the National Governors Association is the bipartisan organization of Governors from the 55 states, territories and commonwealths. NGA’s mission is to share best practices, address issues of national and state interest, and drive innovative solutions that improve state government and support the principles of federalism.

NGA’s Center for Best Practices is the policy and research arm that helps Governors develop and implement solutions to public policy challenges. NGA’s Government Relations group assists in ensuring the voice of Governors are heard in Congress, and the Executive Branch and NGA’s Communications team collaborates with Governors’ offices to amplify bipartisan messaging and strategy.

Throughout the year, NGA convenes Governors and senior advisors for meaningful discourse, problem-solving and thought leadership.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE MEMBER RELATIONS MANAGER
NGA is looking to add an outgoing, resourceful, organized Member Relations Manager within our Operations department. Working under the Membership Program Director, the Member Relations Manager will develop and enhance the member experience for Governors, Governors’ spouses and Governors’ senior staff. The membership team collaborates heavily with the Center for Best Practices, Government Relations, Communications and Operations teams to deliver member value.

Other important responsibilities of the Member Relations Manager include:

  • Manage a portfolio of member services to include coordination and facilitation of member convenings for Governors, Governor’s spouses and Governors’ senior staff, both virtual and in-person, as well as the NGA Winter and Winter Meetings and the bi-annual Seminar for New Governors;
  • Track throughout the year feedback with regard to membership satisfaction with meeting agendas and NGA materials;
  • In collaboration with Membership Program Director, track all gubernatorial elections, candidate’s biographical and contact information and keep NGA staff informed of the current status of elections;
  • Keep an active inventory of all current and former Governors, Governor’s spouses, and senior staff, including names and current contact information in NGA’s CRM database, while ensuring the integrity of data input;
  • Track the engagement of members and recommend programs and services to those who may benefit from increased engagement;
  • Manage membership meeting materials and review for relevancy on a yearly basis;
  • Be responsive to and foster relationships with other divisions of NGA, including Communications, Government Relations, Events, and the Center for Best Practices;
  • Onboard new members and guide them to the resources available;
  • Contribute to the interdepartmental efforts to prepare for member dues renewal;
  • Develop and promote increased engagement of Governors and their staff in NGA activities;
  • Demonstrating a commitment to NGA’s mission and goals to constructively serve the needs of all Governors and
  • Other duties as assigned by the Membership Program Director.

QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates should have a bachelor’s degree or equivalent and five-plus years managing member relations. Experience working with Governors, working in federal or state agencies or a non-profit membership organization is preferred.

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated ability to:

  • Knowledge of best practices for maintaining and managing member relations;
  • Effectively represent NGA under a variety of circumstances, including interactions with Governors, Governors’ spouses, and Governors’ senior staff;
  • Have excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills;
  • Have experience in building and managing a portfolio of relationships with members;
  • Have an optimistic outlook and a flexible, innovative approach to problem-solving;
  • Successfully utilized database/CRM systems;
  • Experience in managing multiple projects;
  • Strong knowledge of MS Office suite; and
  • Travel, as necessary.
