Homeland Security & Public Safety Scholar

Department: Homeland Security and Public Safety
Location: Washington, DC

The NGA Scholar will assist in a variety of activities depending on requests for assistance from governorsí offices and NGA Center staff needs. 

The professional will have the opportunity to conduct research, analysis, and administrative support related to a range of policy issues, including:

Criminal justice and public safety: Conduct statutory, regulatory, and policy research to draft memoranda on improving public safety and reforming criminal justice procedures; Opioid Epidemic: Support state officials who are fighting the combat the heroin and opioid epidemic by researching best practices and sharing lessons learned; Homeland Security: Support the Governors Homeland Security Advisors Council (GHSAC) by researching promising practices in homeland security policy related to public health emergencies, countering violent extremism, disaster resiliency and recovery, federal grant reform, and emerging technologies; Cybersecurity: Support the HSPS cybersecurity team by analyzing emerging cybersecurity challenges and identifying best practices in cybersecurity policy and law; Public safety communications: Support regional workshops to enhance interoperability in state emergency communications networks, and examine policy and legal obstacles to the transition of public safety communications to broadband. 

TRAINING AND QUALIFICATIONS:

At least one year of graduate level studies in public policy or a related field. Familiarity with state homeland security, criminal justice, and public safety issues. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Strong interpersonal skills necessary to effectively work with colleagues, partner organizations, and a variety of high-ranking state policymakers. Ability to work in a nonpartisan manner in a bipartisan political environment.

SALARY

This is a paid internship at $15/hour for the Summer of 2019.
