Government Relations Summer Scholar

Job Description:

The primary responsibilities of the Office of Government Relations NGA Scholar include: 

  • Tracking legislation and monitoring policy actions across a broad portfolio including: energy, natural resources, commerce, economic development, homeland security & public safety, workforce development, education, healthcare, and human services 
  • Assist General Counsel and Legislative Directors as needed with analyzing proposed legislation and federal regulation or composing draft legislation 
  • Attending and/or monitoring Congressional hearings, regulatory meetings, thinktank presentations and relevant informational events 
  • Drafting hearing summaries, policy memos, and other writing assignments 
  • Compiling research on various policy areas for use in meetings with Congressional staff, partner organizations, use on NGA’s website, emails to governors, in responses to governors’ office requests and other outlets
  • Producing at least one long-term research project culminating in a finished background or advocacy document for the Office of Government Relations or General Counsel 
  • Creating special reports using Quorum or related legislative databases 
  • Assisting the Office of Government Relations, Office and of Management, Consulting and Training teams and General Counsel with ad hoc projects 
  • Working with other departments within the National Governors Association to accomplish mutual goals
  • Perform legal research; and 
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Commitment to NGA’s bipartisan mission 
  • Completed at least one year of graduate study in law and pursuing a juris doctorate 
  • Demonstrated attention to detail 
  • Exceptional writing skills 
  • Demonstrated interest in public policy and intergovernmental affairs
  • State government or congressional internship experience


This is a paid internship at $15/hour.

Duration of Service

The internship will be from May 28th, 2019 through August 9th, 2019.
