Program Manager- Consulting

Job Description 

The National Governors Association (NGA) seeks an experienced professional to join us as a Program Manager for Governors' Spouses and Staff and for Governorsí Staff.

Founded in 1908, the National Governors Association (NGA) is the nonpartisan organization of the nationís 55 governors. Through NGA, governors share best practices, address issues of national and state interest and share innovative solutions that improve state government and support the principles of federalism.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES 

The Program Manager for NGA Consulting will work under the direction of NGAís Director of Consulting.  He/she must be reliable, discreet, detail-oriented, and have excellent organizational and project management skills:  

  • Manage the development and implementation of priorities and initiatives of the Governorsí Spousesí Program and serve as lead staff for governors' spouses through the NGA Spousesí Leadership Committee (SLC).
  • Oversee SLC program including the bylaws and election process, and implementation of the chair's initiative and areas of focus.
  • Develop, implement and facilitate annual joint management seminar for Governorsí Spousesí Assistants and Executive Residence Managers (in partnership with host state Governorís team).  
  • Collaborate with NGA Consulting team to implement additional business programs and resource development for governors' staff to include governorsí schedulers, governors' assistants and constituent services and correspondence directors.
  • Collaborate and implement business programs for NGA conferences & seminars such as the NGA Winter and Summer Meetings and the NGA Seminar for New Governors.
  • Serve as key support to NGA Consulting Director to develop and execute management reviews, operational reviews and strategic retreats, online surveys, and special projects and publications relevant to governors and first spouses and their staff. 
  • Collaborate with NGA Office of Communications to strategically promote the work of governors' spouses.
  • Provide technical assistance and conduct research in response to information requests from governorsí and spousesí staff. 
  • Author management and other tools to serve governors' spouses and their staff members. 
  • Provide cross-collaboration support to NGA colleagues (e.g., Education Division, Economic Opportunity Division and Homeland Security & Public Safety Division of NGA Solutions: The Center for Best Practices and NGA Advocacy: Office of Government Relations) in developing and implementing special sessions and forums for governors, spouses and their staff.  

TRAINING AND QUALIFICATIONS 

The ideal candidate will require minimal supervision and be an exceptional team player and possess the following:   

  • Bachelorís degree (or equivalent experience) and 5 to 10+ years of experience; 
  • Experience serving in a state government role not required, but desired;
  • High degree of integrity and confidentiality in handling and processing information of a highly sensitive and critical nature; 
  • Ability to work on a bipartisan basis to support NGAís mission and goals; 
  • Capability to multitask and work independently in a dynamic, changing work environment, setting priorities effectively;  
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to influence others; 
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment; 
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to handle multiple projects and priorities; 
  • Ability to convey essential information clearly and concisely, both in writing and verbally
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint) and strong attention to details; 
  • Willingness to work weekends and late evenings, as needed; 
  • Ability to travel up to 20%
