Business Development Manager

NGA Development is a critical component of the organization, engaging corporate, association, and other philanthropic partners on a variety of initiatives and opportunities that support governors and their states as well as the financial viability of NGA and its core mission.

NGA is seeking an energetic and innovative fundraising or sales professional to manage daily operation of a revenue driven team. Education or background in political science, government services or public affairs will be helpful to understanding the power held by NGA members and the nuances of the state political landscape. Success in this role will be greatly impacted by an intellectual interest in public policy and appreciation for the highly nuanced relationship between industry and government.



The Business Development Manager is a critical position and serves as the anchor of our Corporate Relations fundraising team. Primary duties include managing a diverse team of outside consultants, development of sales materials, daily Salesforce activity reporting and maintenance of a robust revenue pipeline. In addition, this person will assist in maintaining existing revenue and identifying and securing new funding through corporate partnerships, program underwriting and event sponsorships. The successful candidate will manage and work as a team player to support our mission and drive revenue growth.


Through effective leadership and strong business acumen, this candidate will help successfully grow the number of corporate partners, achieve or exceed fundraising goals, and help manage marketing and communications in support of the corporate relations team initiatives and various divisions whose program’s require funding.




  • Creating and executing fundraising strategies to raise the fundraising goal annually from industry partners and work to grow additional revenue support

  • Create and execute a strong sales and marketing plan to meet financial targets; working closely with the Director of Corporate Relations

  • Manage all aspects of fundraising/sales operations; including overseeing and supporting the needs of outside fundraising consultants

  • Support the Director of Corporate Relations and serve as a key member of the Development team influencing and driving strategy, relationship building and best practices to accomplish fundraising goals

  • Manage a portfolio of revenue streams that provide funding for our mission (industry partners, event sponsorship, grants, donations, and other key donor relationships)

  • Generate weekly revenue tracking reports (in coordination with the Finance Department) for the Chief Strategy Officer and CEO/Executive Director

  • Deliver high touch response and customer support to all partners

  • Demonstrate integrity and commitment to NGA’s non-partisan political position at all times




  • Oversee all individual fundraiser activity and provide support as needed to individual fundraisers (scheduling, research, meeting materials, etc.)

  • Providing fundraising expertise, recommendations, and guidance as needed for success

  • Achieve financial goals as directed by Chief Strategic Officer (CSO) and Director of Corporate Relations

  • Establish sales reporting metrics for CSO; track and forecast revenue

  • Provide executive support to CSO on sales strategy, tactics and goals

  • Assist with partner program development and delivery of key benefits

  • Master and fine tune the NGA value proposition (“pitch”) for renewing and acquiring partners

  • Train and manage third-party fundraising consultants in support of revenue goals

  • Daily maintenance of customer records and activity in Salesforce

  • Provide prospecting and account support to Director of Corporate Relations and outside consultants as needed

  • Support CSO on select fundraising prospects in support of special programs

  • Represent NGA at meetings, networking events and other professional gatherings

  • Assist in fundraising for NGA Partners, Partners + Solutions, NGA Meetings, Chair’s Initiative and any other key programs as needed




  • College degree required; Political Science, Communications, or related field preferred

  • 5+ years of experience in a fundraising, outside sales or business development

  • Min 2 years of management experience

  • Track record of meeting and exceeding sales/revenue goals

  • Expertise in high-touch, consultative selling

  • Proven ability to identify prospects, develop customer solutions and build long-term relationships

  • Excellent client relationship management skills including influencing and building relationships with a wide range of stakeholders and influencers

  • Flexibility in adjusting to new, different and changing programs with unique value propositions

  • Proven ability to collaborate across multiple departments and influence at all levels

  • Ability to motivate in a team environment

  • Strong presentation, communication and interpersonal skills;

  • Strong Knowledge of PC based computer applications including Microsoft office products.

  • Proficient in using CRM systems, particularly

  • Ability to travel (10% of year) throughout the US
