Job Description

Founded in 1908, the National Governors Association (NGA) is the nonpartisan organization of the nationís 55 governors. Through NGA, governors share best practices, address issues of national and   state interest and share innovative solutions that improve state government and support the principles of federalism. 

The Education Division provides information, research, policy analysis, technical assistance and grants to governors and their staff in the areas of early childhood, K-12 and postsecondary education. The division focuses on helping governors develop effective policy and support its implementation in the areas of: early education, readiness and quality; College- and career-training standards, Science, Technology, Engineering and Math and related assessments; teacher and leader effectiveness; career and technical education; school choice; data and accountability; and postsecondary (higher education and workforce training) access, success, productivity, accountability and affordability. The division also works on policy issues related to bridging the system divides among the early childhood, K-12, postsecondary and workforce systems.

The Program Assistantís primary function of the Education division is supporting the Division by providing administrative support on projects, division meetings, multi-state convenings and other events, division team meetings, social media and newsletter development, etc.

Duties & Responsibilities 

  • Supports the Division Director with meeting prep, printing, scheduling meetings and phone calls, corresponding with partner organizations, and managing other correspondence at the request of the director
  • Manages division calendar appointments/prepares agendas and other relevant materials for division activities including strategic planning meetings, internal leadership meetings, staff retreats, weekly staff meetings, and weekly OED reports. 
  • Manages administrative logistics for meetings, including strategic planning and fundraising events, and provides content knowledge and support on various issues in preparation for division meetings. 
  • Tracks division activities, updates the center tracker, compiles monthly newsletter content with input from policy analysts. 
  • Researches, edits, and works with policy analysts to develop reports, materials for site visits, and provides other technical assistance support as needed. 
  • Monitors education division email requests, answers questions and inquiries from governorsí education policy advisors, routes questions to division team member(s)when appropriate.


  • Supports the divisionís communications efforts by serving as the liaison to the NGA Communications division; drafts and posts division-related content to Twitter; supports other technical efforts such as podcasts and webinars, including setting up, recording and posting webinars.


An undergraduate degree, 1-2 years of experience in Education Policy, and experience working in MS Office Tools, including Outlook, Skype, PowerPoint, Word, Excel. Familiarity with webinar tools such as Zoom, WebEx or similar tools desired.  

  • Ability to work well within a distributed team 
  • Demonstrated experience using diplomacy and tact to build strong relationships and motivate internal/external customers 
  • Must be able to handle multiple projects simultaneously, be responsive to deadlines and tight timetables, and work well under pressure. 
  • Ability to travel up to 20% of the time
