Senior Accountant

Job Description

The National Governors Association seeks an experienced workforce professional to join the NGA Finance team. The Senior Accountant is responsible for working with internal and external stakeholders and working in partnership with the Controller to help provide strategic financial analysis. This position is a hands-on role, with opportunities to help build strong financial systems for the organization. Founded in 1908, the National Governors Association (NGA) is the nonpartisan organization of the nation's 55 governors. Through NGA, governors share best practices, address issues of national and state interest and share innovative solutions that improve state government and support the principles of federalism.   

Duties and Responsibilities: 

The senior accountant will ensure accuracy and integrity in capturing financial data by performance of the routine and non-routine daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual processes. As well, ensure proper internal controls are in place and operating effectively in all facets of financial reporting operations.

  • Prepare monthly journal entries as needed. These include monthly adjusting entries, accruals, payroll, fringe, investment allocations, and grant allocations
  • Responsible for monthly & year-end close processes and preparation of financial statements.
  • Ensure account reconciliations are timely, accurately prepared, reviewed and all variances are resolved, including credit card and bank reconciliations
  • Help integrate with the Salesforce Platform, which includes creating invoices and billing
  • Record and reconcile non-grant and contract cash deposits
  • Manage the fixed asset process; meet with relevant parties to capture asset status
  • Perform variance analysis and meet monthly with Finance team to discuss variances 
  • Assist with ensuring compliance by departments with finance policies and 
    procedures 
  • Produce standard and ad-hoc financial reports from the Accounting System
  • Support audit process by preparing PBC assigned items, schedules, while responding to audit inquiries in a timely manner
  • Support budget cycle by collaborating with assigned departments and assisting in overall process
  • Perform analysis and validate activity; resolve inconsistencies; discover trends
  • Manage yearly 1099 filings
  • Develop/implement best practices/standardizations to create effective, efficient and accurate accounting operations
  • Assist with special projects
  • Other duties as assigned by the Controller 

Qualifications:

  • In-depth knowledge of spreadsheet and word-processing applications within a Windows environment
  • Advanced Excel skills required
  • Degree in Accounting, CPA preferred
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible accounting experience is needed
  • Working knowledge of automated, web-based accounting systems and reporting tools, preferably in a non-profit environment; experience with Intacct preferred
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks and deadlines required
  • Must have strong interpersonal skills along with ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing and, also have strong background of customer service orientation
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented with ability to meet deadlines, both prescribed and self-imposed. Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously
